On December 9, 2024, the United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) effectively banned the use of two widely used solvents linked to known health issues.

The ban included trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE).  Both have been known for decades to contribute to various cancers, as well as damage to the nervous system, immune system, reproductive system, liver damage and kidney damage.

For more than 100 years TCE has been used as a cleaner and degreasing agent in dry cleaning, automotive repair and various manufacturing processes.  TCE is estimated to be a significant contaminant in drinking water.  The USEPA is finalizing the ban which will prohibit the use of TCE in about a year.

PCE has also been widely utilized as a cleaner and degreasing agent in dry cleaning, lubricants, as a water repellent and adhesives.  Five percent of the U.S. consumes water from systems that exceeds approved government levels of PCE.  The USEPA is finalizing the ban which will prohibit the use of PCE over a ten year phaseout.
